Were you enrolled in school or in a grace period when you were called to active duty?
If you were enrolled in school or if your loan was in a grace period (following graduation or a change in status to less than half-time) when you were called to active duty, VSAC can extend your enrollment, grace period, in-school or graduate fellowship deferment for up to three years during your active duty service.
If your loan is a Subsidized Stafford Loan, the federal government pays the interest that accrues during enrollment, grace, in-school or graduate fellowship deferment periods. If your loan is an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, you remain responsible for interest that accrues. We add any unpaid interest to your loan balance when your loan reenters repayment.
You may be eligible for a deferment even if you are;
- a non full time member of the National Guard or other reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces (current or retired) and;
- called or ordered to active duty on or after 10/1/07 while enrolled at least half-time at an eligible school, or within six months of having been enrolled at least half-time or;
- during the 13 months following the conclusion of the active duty service, or until the borrower returns to enrolled student status on at least a half-time basis, whichever is earlier.
